I must admit, I have been hesitant for years to use GABA because of all the concerns that it does not cross the blood/brain barrier. After having given a certain kind of GABA a try, I am now convinced it helps. First things first. What is GABA. GABA is the primary calming neurotransmitter in the body. When your all worked up emotionally, intellectually, or physically other excitatory neurotransmitters like glutamate and hormones like cortisol keep you ramped. This is a good thing for say taking a test, or exercise, but not for sleep. Sleeping problems are one of the most often issues which brings people to the doctor. Fact is, we live in a high stress society. Sleep issues, are also tied to a dysfunctional or fatigued adrenals. The bottom line is that this GABA probably does not cross the blood brain barrier. Which is probably a good things, as drugs like benzos are GABA agonists, and can be hard to discontinue. This GABA would appear to work directly on the adrenals, essentially calming them down. I use concominantly (at the same time) phosphatidylserine which has good data to show it brings down cortisol. The previous PS product I was using didn't work either. By the way, the GABA seems to act on the GI tract, much like SSRIs or 5-HTP, helping those with constipation. Also, by calming down stress levels, it reduces appetite. Needless to say I'm very excited about it. I am using PharmaGABA 250 and IsoPhos, both from Thorne. Your thoughts? |
